If find yourself near Portland, Maine you must visit Z Fabrics!
This tiny shop located on Congress Street in Portland is packed with bolts & bolts of delightful fabrics. Step into the store and be greeted by shelves popping with color. Bold! Bright! Whimsical! Japanese designs. Amy Butler and more. What fun!!
I was quite taken in by the rolls of colorful “laminated cotton” that were lined up in the front window. I confess, I didn’t know this stuff existed! Not at all like traditional oilcloth… Instead it had a nice “hand,” that will drape well, and is lined with soft cotton. Designs range from muted prints to bold, bright geometrics – all begging to be made into women’s or children’s rain gear. Maybe a rain poncho for your favorite little one?
Corduroy, Cotton Voile, Silk Shantung and Wool
I was also drawn to shelf full of fine wale corduroy, very reminiscent of the comfy corduroy jumpers and overalls that my grandmother made for me when I was a child. On the shelf below the corduroy were a few bolts of lovely cotton voile in delicate prints 54″ wide. Easy to imagine a scarf in this ultrafeminine fabric. In addition to 100% cotton for clothing, upholstery & curtains, Z Fabrics carries other quality natural (and organic) fiber fabrics including silk shantung and wool.
